I simply love radio programmes - since I was a little boy listining avidly programmes on the Rediffusion, the Cable system at that time, and other programmes on my Dad's big radio.

I simply love broadcasting on radio. Since my childhood, I always dreamed up myself emulating my idols on Radiffuion, Charles Arrigo, Fr Born, Effie Ciantar, Victor Galdes et al. I grew up in becoming a constant contributor on Rediffusion, then an emplyee at Xandir Malta (now PBS Malta), ending up as Head of Radio. And I am proud that I was instrumental in founding with others, the, alas, now defunct, FM Bronja, a much needed Radio Cultural Station. Some of my radio series or programmes, - nine, actually – have been awarded the most prestigious Malta Broadcasting Award. This is not a flaunted curriculum vitae, but my pride. Broadcasters should be proud of their efforts and achievments. Broadcasting is not a dilettantish hobby. It is not a hobby at all. It is a professional and demanding, albeit enjoyable, work. Broadcasting on a national netwrok or for a community radio should not make a difference at all on the output of those who partecipate. On radio nothing is better than the best!

When some years ago, a neighbour of mine introduced me to Mr Carmel Calleja, the hard working and dedicated Managing Director of the Community Radio at Birkirkara, Radio BKR, I haven't ceased since to give with pleasure my time and experience to this radio. And I have contributed with my own programmes, participating often in other programmes as well.

I still remember the first board meeting which I attended. Perhaps Karmenu wanted to impress me. And he managed to! The preparation of the coming schedule was amply discussed and amended and detailed till at last it was finilised. I barely opened my mouth except for suggesting a title or two titles for new programmes. I prefered to listen ( and learn). Loved dedication is the first step towards perfection.

During these ten years of broadcasting, BKR has had the able service of professional broadcasters but has always raised, like in a well groomed nursery, new dedicated young, and not so young, broadcasters.

I avail my self of these opportunity to give a word or two of advice to my colleagues. Love this work. Prepare every minute of it. (Even improvisation has to be prepared!) Respect your listiners. They are the real core of any radio. Take attentive care of the laguage you use, accoriding to the lingo and style of your programme. Be aware of the regulations issued by the Broadcasting Authority and the manegerial staff of BKR. Altough radio is consideresd ‘a blind medium” make it full of life and colourful. And visual! During my long years as broadcaster I have coined the phrase: A radio programme in colour! Make this paradox come true! Don't turn radio into a juke-box or a chatter-box. Produce your programmes! And entartain! And make this radio the voice of Birkirkara. Our community. An all-embracing community. Even those Karkarizi who tune in from abroad.

And last but not least, good job Karmenu, and Birkirkara Football Club, and friends. A heartfelt Ad multos annos!
